He stood looking towards the path that wound up the hill and disappeared into the distant forest.This is it, he thought to himself. Time to find my place in the world.He filled his pack with supplies, a change of clothes, some hard bread and cheese for the road. From the cupboard he took his father's old leather jacket and put it on, feeling the comfortable weight and smelling the familiar musty scent.The boy walked out of the cottage and turned to look at the only home he had ever known. His father was gone now, and his mother too weak to care for herself let alone him. This place held only memories now.As he walked through the village, people smiled and nodded to him. Some called out well-wishes and advice for his journey, but no one tried to stop him. Every boy eventually left to seek his fortune. That's just the way it was done.The path led him up into the hills, through fields of wildflowers and meadows of long grass swaying in the breeze. He came to a swift flowing stream and stopped to refill his waterskin. The icy water tasted pure and clean as he drank deeply.As afternoon turned into evening, the boy came to a tall oak tree overlooking a valley. This looked as good a place as any to make camp for the night. He gathered some deadfall branches and started a small fire, digging a shallow hole to keep the flames from spreading. As the flames crackled and smoke spiraled upwards, he ate his simple supper while watching the sunset paint the sky with brilliant colors.The next day he rose early and continued his trek into the forest. The path was less well-worn here and at times he lost the way, but he managed to stay mostly headed in an easterly direction. Hope and curiosity pulled him forward though he had no clear goal, just the need to see what lay beyond this place he had always known.After several more days of walking, the boy came to a wide river. Falling willow branches dipped into the swift current which sang soothingly as it flowed past. He walked along following the river, stopping now and then to rest his weary legs.That evening he came upon an old woman sitting by the riverbank. She greeted him warmly and invited him to share her fire and simple supper of fish and roots. The boy found that talking with the old wanderer refreshed him more than food and rest. She told tales of fantastic creatures living deep in the ancient forest and myths of long forgotten gods who used to walk these lands. The boy stayed up late into the night listening intently and asking question after question.Waking the next morning, the boy found the old woman had disappeared leaving only a trail of footprints heading upstream. He considered following her for a time, but something within said his journey lay in an easterly direction still. And so he crossed the river and continued walking through the forest.Weeks passed and seasons changed. The boy met many folk on his journey - some kind, some cruel. He helped those he could and learned from all he encountered. Along the way his pack grew lighter as supplies ran out and were not replaced. Eventually he walked with nothing but the clothes on his back and the staff he carved from a fallen branch.The forest paths came to an end and the high walls of a castle could be seen in the distance. The boy came to the castle gates and waited to see what would come next. A guard approached and asked his business to which the boy had no answer. I am simply on a journey, he said. What will you find at the end of it? asked the guard. The boy thought for a long while and finally said, Myself.The guard smiled and opened the gates, saying Then you have almost arrived, wanderer.
