I don't directly work with MySQL, but I've had hosting people have issues from time to time. Most lost connections to most any port from a server are usually due to some kind of timeout someplace. Not sure how to solve this but I'm sure someone from your host, or perhaps a server expert more experienced than I am here in the forum can answer that more specifically.
