I have encountered this problem too.
1) In order to clear the entire value, when the value is selected (blue background), press the Backspace key.
2) In order to delete one/more characters in the value, ...
a) click on it, preferably to the right of the character to be deleted
or
b) press the right-arrow key to unselect the value, then press left/right arrow keys to position the insertion point (blinking vertical bar) to the right of the character to be deleted
... then use the Backspace key to remove the character.
